The Academy of Fine Arts

The Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts (ISAFA / İDGSA in Turkish) was founded in 1882 by Osman Hamdi Bey with the name "Mekteb-i Sanayi-i Nefise-i Şahane" as the first art and architecture school of the Ottoman Empire and it trained only male students.

In 1914 with painter Mihri Hanım's proposal and initiative İnas Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi (fine arts school for women) was established to educate women artists.
